Dear Olympic friends,

Welcome to the fourth edition of the ANOC newsletter. This month we are celebrating winter sport following the conclusion of the fantastic Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 and the 100 year anniversary of the Olympic Winter Games.

Winter sport has developed significantly around the world over the last century. The first ever Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924 featured just 16 national teams but the Games of today involves thousands of athletes from more than 90 NOCs. Gangwon 2024 has shown that while winter sport faces challenges, it is continuing to thrive with young athletes from 78 NOCs taking part and a number of NOCs winning their first ever Winter YOG medals. This newsletter takes a look at some of these achievements and how Gangwon 2024 has served as a key legacy of the Olympic Winter Games.

We hope you enjoy reading it!

HISTORIC MEDAL WINNERS AT GANGWON 2024 HOPING TO BUILD ON SUCCESS FOR THEIR NOCS

The Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) saw athletes from four National Olympic Committees (NOCs) set new records as they became the first in their countries’ histories to win a Winter YOG medal.

For Brazil’s Zion Bethonico, Agnese Campeol of Thailand, Türkiye’s Muhammed Bozdağ, and Jonathan Lourimi from Tunisia, Gangwon 2024 is a Winter YOG they will not forget.

“It feels like an achievement I will brag about for the rest of my life. I couldn’t be happier about it,” said Zion Bethonico who won a bronze medal in the men’s snowboard cross in Gangwon.

Thailand’s Chef de Mission Dr. Supitr Samahito also couldn’t be happier with Agnese Campeol’s silver medal in the women’s monobob.

“We’ re so excited and very very happy for our first Winter YOG medal,” Supitr says. “As you may know, we come from the tropical country, where we don’t have snow and our athletes are coming from the hottest part of Thailand.

All the NOCs will be hoping success in Korea can be a springboard for more.

“I have high hopes this is the first of many for Brazil because we have extremely high potential for snow sports and any sport at all,” Zion says. “I hope this can be a huge catalyst for sports in general in Brazil.”

This is a sentiment shared by others who enjoyed similar experiences in Korea.

“Muhammed Bozdağ's silver medal is a turning point in Türkiye's winter sports landscape,” says Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC) Secretary General and ANOC Executive Council member Nese Gundogan commenting on the young Turk’s silver medal in the short-track speed skating 1,000-meter event.

“This achievement serves as a catalyst, not only for Muhammed's promising career but also for fostering a deeper interest in winter sports among our youth. It's a pivotal moment that will inspire the next generation to embrace winter sports, contributing to the sustained development and success of Türkiye in this field.”

For Tunisia too, they are hoping to tap into the opportunity that Jonathan Lourimi’s silver in the monobob presents.

“Of course, winter sports are something new for Tunisia, IOC Member and President of the NOC Mehrez Boussayene. “But there are almost one and a half million Tunisians living abroad. Many families have children who love winter sports. Our responsibility is to give them the opportunity to live their dream. And we believe that Gangwon 2024 will pave the way for a real development of winter sports for young people living in Tunisia as well as those living outside the country.”

Tunisia will now turn its attention to drawing up a national strategy for the development of winter sports, Boussayene explains. For Gundogan and the TOC, the hope one day is medals at the Winter Games but most important is to “cultivate a society deeply integrated with Olympic values.” In Thailand they are looking to build greater awareness “stressing skills, rules, regulations and organizing competitions as needed at the level of nationwide within the country.” While for athlete, Zion, the future target is simple: Milano-Cortina 2026.

Mrs. Gunilla Lindberg

ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg Chaired the IOC Coordination Commission for the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018 and paid many visits to the Province over seven years. Mrs Lindberg was also a member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympic Winter Games.

1 - WHAT HAVE THE GAMES MENT TO THIS REGION IN KOREA AND WHAT DIFFERENCES CAN YOU SEE FROM YOUR FIRST VISIT TO PYEONGCHANG?

My first visit was in 2011 and at that time PyeongChang and the province of Gangwon was mostly a big agriculture area with potato fields, cornfields and an important fishing industry. The Games provided completely new infrastructure with highways to the capital, Seoul, and a railway that makes it possible for the people of Seoul to enjoy the beautiful skiing facilities travelling easily by train.

The motto for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Grow Together, Shine Forever, is a good example of how international events can bring education and culture of other countries to new places in the world.

The legacy of the Games has of course also been significant with hundreds of thousands new tourists not only during the winter but also through the rest of the year. New working opportunities and new possibilities for the youth of Gangwon have been significant. The Korean NOC also has for many years implemented a Dream Program for young people from foreign countries where winter sport does not really exist.  These groups of people have had the opportunities to experience different kind of winter sports and some of them are now here as participants in the YOG.

2 - HOW DO YOU SEE THE FACT THAT THE YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES ARE TAKING PLACE IN A HOST CITY FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES?

I think it is a wonderful idea which should be the fact also for more events. For all these young athletes to compete in wonderful venues that their heroes and role models have been competing in is a big experience and motivation for their future careers. Some of the IFs have also come back for different championships and events and I think that is an excellent way of keeping the Olympic spirit alive after the Olympic Games are over.

The population and especially the young generation will always keep a wonderful souvenir of the world coming to Gangwon. Many of them have been volunteers and they have met young people from many interesting parts of the world. And when we are talking about peace, for me the Olympic Movement is the best promoter of peace and the best example where people meet each other and make friends without any boarders or discrimination.

3 - IS THIS THE FIRST CITY THAT HAS HOST YOUTH GAMES IN OLYMPIC VENUES?

Actually not – the first Youth Olympic Winter Games took place in the City of Innsbruck in Austria in 2012. Innsbruck hosted the Olympic Winter Games both in 1964 and in 1976. I think this is a very good way to keep the Olympic Flame burning and to make use of what the Games has brought to the city.

4 - HOW DO YOU FEEL AS A PERSON COMING BACK HERE AFTER MANY VISITS IN THE PREPARATION OF BOTH THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN 2018 AND THE YOUTH GAMES IN 2024?

For me this area has almost become a second home. I have got friends for life and wonderful memories of a beautiful country with a very interesting culture and history and fantastic food and nature. I know that many of the young people competing here during these weeks will return home with great memories and many of them will have the opportunity to come back and enjoy new friends and culture.

52 NOCS BENEFIT FROM NOC PHOTO PROGRAMME GANGWON 2024

A total of 52 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) benefited from access to high-quality images at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games thanks to the NOC Photo Programme Gangwon 2024 – delivered in partnership between ANOC and the IOC.

Over 6500 photos were taken by the four programme photographers, capturing approximately 1203 athletes in competition. Photos were available to the participating NOCs through the IOC’s Olympic Information Service (OIS) platform.

The programme built on the inaugural NOC Photo Project which ANOC delivered during the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. Following the success of the project, ANOC partnered with the IOC to expand it further with more photographers and almost twice as many photos taken in Gangwon compared to Beijing.

The programme received very positive feedback from NOCs who were able to use the images to enhance their digital and social media output and better engage with their fans.

Speaking of their experiences, the San Marino NOC said: “For a small NOC like ours this program is of great benefit. At the Winter Olympic events our delegations are usually made up of 3-4 people and it is not always easy to find beautiful, good quality images, which are very important for use on social media.

In addition to the quality of the images, we really appreciated the speed of the service which allowed us to produce content in almost real time, as if our small communications team were present on site. So, thank you for this great service!”

The New Zealand describing the NOC Photo Programme Gangwon 2024 and photos available on OIS said:

“The NZOC used the photos to cover the Games on our social media channels. These posts gained more than 100,000 engagements from fans of the New Zealand Team during the Games. These photos also added real value to our athletes experience at the Games. The photos were appreciated by the athletes and their families and will serve as a reminder of the amazing Games experience they had.“
