ANOC, as a proud signatory of the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework (S4CA) since December 17, 2020, is fully committed to rallying its community around this critical issue. The framework's mission is clear: to guide sports organizations in achieving global climate goals. This includes a pledge to cut emissions in half by 2030 and strive for net-zero emissions by 2040.
"We must unite as a sports community to combat climate change and leverage the power of sports to inspire society to take action. At ANOC, we provide a platform for National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to share best practices and engage in vital discussions," emphasized ANOC President, Robin Mitchell.
ANOC General Secretary Gunilla Lindberg added, "We're actively assisting NOCs in developing sustainability plans and tangible goals. Leading by example, we're taking significant measures ourselves."
Since announcing its sustainability commitment during the 2022 ANOC General Assembly in Seoul, Republic of Korea, ANOC has taken additional steps, including:
- Measurement and Transparency: ANOC now annually measures its emissions, sharing the results on its sustainability webpage.
- Sustainable Procurement: Sustainability is now a key factor in ANOC's procurement process, alongside economic considerations.
- Stewardship: ANOC actively supports the sustainability development goals of the 206 NOCs by sharing tools, knowledge, and best practices. Empowering NOC’s to share this knowledge with their member National Federations.
ANOC continues to align with UNFCCC campaigns and encourages NOCs to join the Sports for Climate Action framework. Collaborating with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), ANOC motivates NOCs to work towards climate neutrality.
To further support NOCs' sustainability development, ANOC has partnered with The Toolbox to host a series of five educational webinars. These webinars cover the eight essential steps for implementing sustainability best practices within organizations. Over 80 NOCs have participated, sharing positive progress in their sustainability efforts.
In addition to its commitment to S4CA, ANOC is actively involved in the United Nations Environmental Programme's Clean Seas Campaign, fighting against marine plastic pollution.
